At the last RETS Trimester meeting, December 5 – 7th in Miami Florida, the Real Estate Standards Organization (RESO) Board of Directors concluded each RETS Workgroup will be redefined by the end of December 2007. The Board of Directors evaluated and reviewed all existing RETS Workgroups, dissolving a few and creating a few more.

Standards

Syndication - The Syndication Work Group will focus on create a standardized listing data and transport specification that makes it easy for brokers to syndicate their listings to multiple sites..

Compliance Testing - The Compliance Testing Workgroup is responsible for developing tools to test the compliance of RETS implementations.

Data Schemas - The purpose of the group is to define the XML Schemas for instance documents that contain MLS information. Data is the heart of the standard and this workgroup has been one of the most active in recent months and promises to continue to be so in the coming months as the Property schema is being finalized for voting at the April meeting.

Query - The Query Workgroup is tasked with defining, developing, testing, and proposing a new query mechanism that simplifies data access in a unified XML payload.

Security – The Security Workgroup is working on establishing SSO standards within the RETS standard. In addition, the Security Workgroup reviews all change proposals for security concerns.

Update – Making listing entry easier and reducing the amount of duplicate listing entry for brokers and agents are key goals for the Update workgroup.

Transport - The mission of the Transport Workgroup is to provide technical processes for analyzing extensions to transport methods in current and future versions of the RETS specification.

Business

Certification - The Certification Workgroup is responsible for providing direction to the Compliance Testing Workgroup regarding what compliance tests are necessary for certification as RETS compliant. This Work Group's primary objective for the next 90 days is to help MLSs adopt the new NAR MLS policy for RETS to be adopted by mid 2009.

Marketing - The Marketing Workgroup is responsible for promoting RETS to the broader real estate community as well as working with the community to determine how RETS can better serve their needs

Education – The Education Workgroup will identify and create documentation required by the real estate community to understand, implement and support RETS

Each person interested in becoming a Workgroup Participant must join the Workgroup via a Sign Up form placed on the Workgroup page on RETS.org. Each Workgroup page displays the Sign Up form. Only one form need be completed for multiple Workgroups. Once participants have registered, the Workgroup participants will nominate and vote for a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Scribe. If you are interested in acting in one of these roles, please post your interest to the forum for the workgroup you are interested in leading.

Now is the time to become involved in RETS. RETS affects every person in the real estate community, don’t sit by and let others make decisions for you. Let your voice be heard, take action and become involved. There has long been a misconception that progress on the RETS specification can only be made by technical people. While most of the nuts and bolts depend on technical minds, the general direction in which RETS moves is also driven by the community who depends on it. As with any product, the users of the final product see things differently from the creators.
